The Exploration of Skydrop Cave in the Southwest Desert

The Southwest desert continues to impress and re-define my expectations of what could be hidden beneath the surface. These geologically significant caves give clues to the ancient past that can't be seen from above. Cave exploration is essential to understand geologic history and inspire future cavers. Skydrop Cave is a significant cave first discovered by explorer and friend David Harris. Knowing how many other caves have been altered by heavy steel bars in the name of 'protection,' David kept this cave in silence — a natural gate of secrecy protecting it from damage and political debate.

On this particular trip I hand-picked cavers aspiring to get deeper into project caving. Everyone on this team exceeded my expectations. I also want to give Jason Ballensky, Cory and Brendon Kowallis a lot of credit for keeping this cave in confidence and for the cartography and exploration they endeavored when it was first discovered. Within Skydrop Cave there are places where every step can apply damage — not having the right technique to move through a cave causes harm. We all have a right to understand and explore our lands and we all have an obligation to protect them. If you are interested in learning more about project caving, reach out directly.
