Not Imlay Canyon, Zion National Park, Utah

READ ROPEWIKI CAREFULLY before attempting this route — a fatality occurred here in 2015 related to the first two drops. Not Imlay Canyon drops 800ft in about a quarter mile inside Zion NP, passing the world-famous Imlay Canyon. 2-hour hike from the first bus out of the visitor center via Angels Landing and the West Rim trail to the Imlay sneak. Team: Heather, Tena, James, Andy, Justin. I would rate this 4AIII (not 3AIII) given the rope lengths and technical route.

Rap 1-2 system: The first rap is ~180ft total requiring an 8-block lower with a 200ft rope to a ledge, then a 165ft drop using a 330ft rope doubled. We could see and hear the Narrows below from the first anchor! Rap 6: 90ft — webbing needed replacement as of 9/26/2017. Rap 7 (the big one): estimated 230-280ft — use at least a 300ft rope. The last 120-140ft is open air, depositing you directly into the Narrows. Pack rope in a bag to avoid hitting tourists below.

We were bombarded with questions at the bottom from Narrows tourists on how we got down the cliff. Lines of people walking through — I almost got into a sword fight with my trekking pole vs. a selfie stick. What a great canyon — a spectacular change of scenery from a traditional Zion canyon run. Bring a 300ft rope for rap 1 and the last rap. Always check current ropewiki.com beta before attempting.
