Kelso Dunes, California

Kelso Dunes covers about 45 square miles of desert in the Mojave — quartz and feldspar sand carried by prevailing winds into ocean-like meandering dunes. The tallest dune in the Kelso area is the second tallest in California, reaching around 650ft from the base. Vegetation holds much of the terrain together, pacing the movement of the dunes.

The dunes have a famous booming sound when sand slides down the face — it vibrated like a low-end musical instrument with each step descending at night. Moisture locked inside the dunes amplifies waveform vibrations from the rolling sand. The conditions need to be very dry on the surface while remaining moist inside the dune. It was really interesting to hear the dunes sing.

A beautiful and accessible Mojave Desert sand dune experience. The road is well-maintained and the dunes are an easy hike from the parking area. One of the most unique sensory experiences in the Southwest — highly recommended at sunset when the golden light plays off the dune crests and the evening breeze activates the singing.
