Artist's Palette & Artist's Drive, Death Valley National Park

Artist's Palette in Death Valley is one of the most visually extraordinary geological features in the American Southwest — a hillside of volcanic deposits oxidized into vivid shades of pink, green, yellow, purple, red, and orange. The colors result from different minerals oxidizing at different rates within the volcanic deposits.

Artist's Drive is a one-way 9-mile scenic loop that passes the Palette and other dramatic geological formations. Late afternoon golden light accentuates the colors most dramatically. The Palette is a short walk from a pullout along the drive. A must-stop for anyone driving through the center of Death Valley.
