After October Gypsum Cave we headed to Paiute Cave, a lava tube on the Arizona Strip in the North Grand Canyon region. This cave was more of a pile of breakdown beyond a room inside a volcanic sink, but what made it remarkable was the rare colored pictographs. The Paiute inhabited this region for thousands of years and are thought to have drawn these red and yellow pictographs inside the cave walls. A cold sink, with temperatures dropping 15-20 degrees as you descend. A report suggests the cave may extend another 300ft through breakdown but nothing else was found on this visit.
