Monte Alban is the ancient Zapotec capital perched on a leveled mountain above Oaxaca City — one of the earliest cities in Mesoamerica. The site dates to around 500 BC and served as the political and cultural center of the Zapotec people for over a thousand years. The main plaza is flanked by pyramids, temples, and an astronomical observatory. Visited during travel days on the Sistema Huautla expedition in Oaxaca, Mexico.
