The day after Castleton Tower, I followed a GPS track to the viewpoint of Granary Canyon — a spectacular drop into the red rock with the Fangs and the Sand Flats visible in the distance. The first drop had a single anchor with no quick link, so I built my own and rapped to the first shelf, then the second, about 100ft total. Then the rope stuck. Repeated pull attempts failed. Solo, stranded on a desert shelf. I put on my ascenders — but noticed the crack in the wall above was climbable, especially after chimneying Castleton Tower yesterday. Chimneyed up almost to the top, worked around to retrieve the stuck rope, then finished the canyon. A reminder that self-rescue skills are not optional in remote canyon terrain.
