Boomerang Cave, Utah

Met Peter Hartley at 7am for the 2-hour drive to Logan Utah in crunching single-digit temperatures. The road to the cave had 4 feet of sugar powder snow requiring full avalanche kit — beacon, shovel, poles. The quartzite layer Peter pointed out creates a contact zone where caves develop above and below — Mississippian, Devonian strata layers generating significant cave systems. After stopping at spring resurgences, we hiked up to the cave. The parking lot was cold and crisp — dry air that almost makes you cough. A different caving experience entirely from Alabama and Central America: crampons, ice axes, and avalanche awareness as standard kit. The cave itself had some impressive formation and passage.
