Baptist Draw & Upper Chute Canyon Loop, San Rafael Swell, Utah

Baptist Draw and Upper Chute Canyon Loop in the San Rafael Swell rates 3BIII and takes a full day. The approach from behind the Swell on a high-clearance 2WD road delivers you to the mesa top. After a blown tire in Price replaced at Big O, the actual canyon was worth the detour. The sandstone walls in Baptist Draw had wavy linear cuts in the grooves like someone combed the rock, and the canyon's long parallel S-turns seemed to go on endlessly. The confluence with Upper Chute completes the loop back to the car. Bring lots of water — none available. Rating: solid 3BIII.
