Badlands of South Dakota

The Badlands of South Dakota form one of the most otherworldly landscapes in North America — eroded pinnacles, buttes, and hoodoos rising from ancient sea floor sediments. The terrain shifts from yellow to orange to purple depending on the mineral content of each exposed layer. One of the world's premier paleontological sites with fossil beds of ancient horses, rhinos, and saber-toothed cats visible at the surface.
