Alcatraz Canyon, Robbers Roost, Utah

The name says it all. A big entrance into corridors that can leave you feeling you are not getting out. Even some early explorers backed out of the tightest sections due to feeling too stuck. Alcatraz starts with a beautiful rap anchored from your car down into the canyon — leave your rope hard fixed to the car as you continue your descent. There is one more rap to negotiate after some downclimbing.

From the last rap, the canyon gets tighter as the walls close in. We broke our large group into 3 smaller groups, heading in every half hour — this worked quite well. There are sections where you have to stem higher and sections where you turn sideways and drag your pack. Communication is helpful and a small pack with minimal gear is key. This canyon will chew up your clothing and gear so be prepared. It took us 5 hours car to car. I highly recommend adding it to your must-visit list when you are in the area.
