EL PENON, EAST COLOMBIAN DEEP KARST BELT OF THE ANDEAN MOUNTAINS

Colombia has seen a lot of conflict in the previous decades but stepping into the country we found nothing but great people and absolutely amazing, unexplored karst regions.  One such region is located in the far east Andes with the epicenter being a small town called El Penon.  Exploration with the El Penon region has been fairly recent,  yet the discoveries have been significant for Colombian anthropology, archeology, and geology.  the abundance of gold that the Muisca used to make outfits where prevalent throughout this region including the artifacts that have been inside of these caves. Furthermore, the significance of these caves provided a permanent residence within these caves as well as burial grounds for the FARC.  A continued effort to explore and document these caves will continue with american cavers working with along the side of the Colombian cavers and universities.
