Fish Springs National Wildlife Refuge sits about 40 miles east of the Nevada border in Utah — a remote basin that resembles Death Valley but harbors a series of extraordinary geothermal features. The basin has 8 hot spring pots with excellent water flow, some reaching near boiling temperature. One spring has a bathtub and pipe setup for soaking at cooler temperatures. The crust is thinner between Salt Lake and California due to tectonic stretching, allowing more geothermal activity to persist. Hot Springs Cave is a gated archaeological cave protecting artifacts from Indian tribes who thrived when Lake Bonneville was more vibrant. One spring in particular offers a significant dive opportunity with clear blue water and substantial resurgence flow.
