Smith Creek Cave, Nevada

After pushing the underwater passage at Gandy Warm Springs Beware Cave, Smith Creek Cave's large entrance was visible from the dirt road five miles away. A rockier road led to the base of the mountain. Rain was incoming so we moved fast. Inside, the entrance room has debris stratum ranging from silt to human-deposited layers of dung, ash, charcoal, twigs, hair, and flora remains dating to the last Holocene — an archaeological site protected by the DNR. A dry, dusty crawl leads to a second entrance with a spectacular valley viewpoint where Ancient Indians could watch for approaching visitors across the Lake Bonneville basin. Two entrances total.
