Waking up at 4am to drive to Idaho to visit the second largest lava tube cave on the continental United States. Lava tube caves form differently from limestone solution caves — lava flows cool and harden on the outside while molten rock continues flowing through the interior until the flow stops, leaving a hollow tube that can extend for miles. Gypsum Cave in Idaho may have been near the eruption center given its size. The lower viscosity flows that formed the ceiling created a baseline for the tube near the surface.
